Animal Flash Cards for Kids

One day, I was watching Animal Planet on the cable with my children. I realized that although children know the names of many animals, they don't know how to write about them correctly. When a preschooler writes about an animal, he/she focuses on the number of legs, color, and diet of an animal but older children need to describe it in more detail. There is a certain vocabulary required to describe an animal. Also, children tend to know more about farm animals but not that much about wild animals. Another thing is that there are some unique animals like beavers that need to be introduced to children. This is my small attempt to fill this gap in children's knowledge. Frankly speaking, I wouldn't call it a small effort as it took me 2-3 days to complete this project 😄. The reason for this is that I wanted to simplify the language used so that it is easy for children all over the world and not just native English speakers. My philosophy for writing about animals is very simple and clear; I keep on teaching my children that when you write about an animal, it is essential that you talk about these three things:

◾ Describe the animal

◾ Describe where it lives

◾ Describe what it eats

I used the same concept in my insect worksheets. You can check them out here: Insects Worksheets

And I have used the same concept in these animal flash cards. These are double-sided flashcards. A cute animal picture with its name is on one side and a short writeup on that animal is on the other side. Just print out on A4-sized paper.  Stick on a piece of cardboard strip...you can check out the complete method in my Geography flash cards post. Also, I have provided an essential vocabulary list needed to be understood by children in order for them to write about animals. As a bonus, I have created a couple of worksheets to test the knowledge of the children. Hope you like this effort. Do tell me in comments if you want more flash cards like this as the animal kingdom is HUGE ðŸ˜„
