Jolly Phonics Group 1
According to Oxford Dictionary, phonics is a "method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with symbols in an alphabetic writing system". In simple words, each letter of the alphabet has a sound. Instead of teaching young children the names of these alphabets, the sounds are taught. For example "a" makes the sound /a/...this is exactly the sound that comes from your mouth in the beginning when you say the word "apple" or "ant". The letter "a" makes a different sound in words like "arm" and "ate" but these rules are taught later.
Jolly Phonics is a synthetic phonics system where all the letters of the alphabet have been split into seven groups. Each group contains 6 letters or their combinations so a total of 42 sounds are taught. What do I mean by a combination of letters? Remember that the combination of letters "s" and "h" makes the sound /sh/ when it comes at the beginning of words like sheep or ship. So, a combination of letters makes a particular sound too. Hence, we have 42 sounds in Jolly Phonics instead of 26 sounds where 26 is the total number of letters in the English Alphabet.
If you have been following my blog for a long time, you might know about my phonics app, which is free on Google Play Store. You can look at the details here. You can download it from Google Play Store by visiting this link. It teaches all the letter sounds and different phonics rules and follows the pattern of Jolly Phonics but it is available for free. If you want proper step-by-step instructions for helping your children read then have a look at this detailed article that I wrote for this sole purpose.
Besides the phonics app, I have also published phonics flashcards that can be easily printed, cut, and used. Have a look at them here.
If you like doing worksheets with your children, then as a parent I would personally recommend purchasing an inktank printer such as HP Smart -Tank 6001 Wireless Cartridge-Free all in one printer. There are no cartridges just ink bottles and believe you me, we have been using the printer constantly for the last 3 years with no refills.
I am in love with how economical and efficient these new ink tank printers are; the printer has made my life so much easier as I don't have to rush to the market to get printouts and the printer doesn't even require refills (for at least 2 years): a win-win situation! The following printer is available on Amazon so just click here to purchase it from the comfort of your home and get it delivered to your home easily and conveniently.
And a printer is incomplete without a set of economical A4 size printer paper. Do check out this great deal by Amazon: 500 sheets of A4 sized printer paper, a must in my home!
Coming back to the main topic i.e. Jolly Phonics worksheets, I have designed these worksheets for Jolly Phonics Group 1 that cover the letters s, a, t, i, p, n. There are matching, coloring, writing, and coloring activities. I hope you like this effort. All my resources are free. Do share it with friends and family if you like my work 😊
For younger children who are still struggling with pencil grip, I recommend using crayons for these worksheets and no one can do crayons as well as Crayola. Their washable crayons are so convenient as you can easily clean crayon accidents from clothes or walls😊. You can conveniently get the crayons delivered to your home without leaving the comfort of your home; physical shopping is such a hassle with younger children.
