Verbs and Tenses for Grade 1

Hello friends,
Learn and practice verbs and tenses in this beautiful e-book called "My First Book of Verbs and Tenses".

Before downloading the high-quality PDF for the verbs and tenses worksheets for the kids' booklet, spend a few minutes with me to go over verbs and their role in the English language. When children start learning the English language, they are taught the correct usage of verbs in the very beginning. Verbs are action words. They tell us what action is taking place. For example, I swim. Here the action word or verb is swim.

What is so complicated about verbs? There is nothing complicated as such but some rules have to be followed when using verbs; the form of verbs changes depending on when the action is taking place. Look at the following two sentences:

 1. I swim.

 2. I swam yesterday.

These two sentences don't mean the same thing as they use different tenses. The first sentence means that I do the action (swimming) often. This sentence is in the Present Simple form of tense. The second sentence means that I did some swimming and I did it yesterday. It has a different meaning than the first sentence. It means that the action i.e. swimming was performed in the past and it is finished now. This sentence uses the Past Simple form of tense.

There are basically only three tenses in the English Language: the present, the past, and the future. The present tense is used to tell about an action that is happening now or it is used for an action that is always true. The past tense is used for an action that has already happened before this point in time. The future tense is used for an action that has to take place.

This is a very broad division of tenses. Each of these tenses (present, past, and future) is further divided into four sub-tenses: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, and Perfect Continuous.

In the beginning, children are only taught the Simple version of the three basic tenses:

1. Present Simple Tense

2. Past Simple Tense

3. Future Simple Tense

So, this is part 1 of my plan to teach tenses to children. I have made these worksheets to focus on only the simple tenses. I will go on to the other tenses in other parts. Let's look at some examples of the usage in the picture below:

As you can see the root verb in the examples above is swim.
When it is being used in past form, it changes its form and becomes swam.
In its future simple form, it stays the same but will is added before it to show that the action will happen in the future.
Now, this requires two kinds of practice. First, you have to remember the changes required to make a verb turn into its future simple form. And another important thing is the learning of the past form of a verb. Children have to learn that the past form of swim is swam.

I know that there is another form of verb called the past participle but I believe that that form is too advanced for beginners to English especially children who are learning English as a secondary language. So, let's start with some easy, common verbs and their past forms and delay the learning of past participle form for a later time.

The learning of the past form of verbs requires some time and practice. Some verbs like cook just require the addition of "ed" at the end of it to make it into a past form.
1. I cook lasagne.
2. I cooked lasagne.
3. I will cook lasagne.

Isn't this example simple? Then, we have irregular verbs like swim where the past tense is not as simple as adding "ed" at the end of it. The past form of swim is swam. The past form of run is ran. The past form of sleep is slept. Children in the beginning struggle with this. You may hear them saying runned and sleeped and this has to be gently corrected while they are trying to speak.
If English is their first language, they will learn it faster but for other children whose first language is not English, this may be difficult but not impossible. I am providing a list of common verbs and their past forms in the ebook too. I have tried to keep it simple and colorful. I hope you like my effort. This is the way I taught English to my children. The second thing is lots of reading. Books are your children's best friends 😊

If you regularly do worksheets with your children, then as a parent I would personally recommend purchasing Canon's megatank printer. I am in love with how economical and efficient these new ink tank printers are; the printer has made my life so much easier as I don't have to rush to the market to get printouts.
