How to Make your Children Speak English Fluently

You can use the following steps that I have used successfully with my children:
1. Try to speak more and more English with your children. At least, one parent should only speak in English with them.
2. Get your children books and read with them every night before bedtime. Make it a habit. For age-appropriate free ebooks, check out this site:

Another great collection of books for young readers is the Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne. It is an amazing transition from Oxford Reading Tree books to chapter books.

https://www.goodreads.com/series/41463-magic-tree-house. Some children are not interested in Magic Tree House books. You can try giving them Roald Dahl books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James, and the Giant Peach, etc. Other great classic chapter books for early readers are the Secret Seven series, the Faraway Tree series, and the Wishing Chair series by Enid Blyton.

3. Find cute, educational children's programs and cartoons and let them watch these programs for some time every day as these will automatically improve their spoken English. Children can learn a lot by hearing so this is an excellent way of making them better in spoken English. Again, unlimited screen time is unhealthy so you will have to discipline your children. 1-2 hrs of screen in a day is very normal and not unhealthy.
My children have seen the following cartoons/programs over the years and these programs are very entertaining but educational at the same time and help in improving spoken English:
(i) Barney and Friends
(ii) Dora the Explorer
(iii) Go, Diego, Go
(iv) The Wonder Pets
(v) Justin Time

4. Make them do short speeches in front of you so that they gain their confidence in spoken English among their loved ones first before speaking English in front of strangers. You can start with the following topics:
(i) A few lines about myself
(ii) My favourite animal
(iii) My favourite toy
(iv) My family
(v) My hobby
You can also tell them to talk about a particular animal in general such as a snake, tiger, shark, and speak a few sentences about these animals. Correct their wrong English gently without discouraging them.
5. For advanced spoken English, work on the 12 tenses of basic English. Tenses are very important and children usually have a problem with handling tenses. Do exercises about all types of tenses so the children know which tense to use when constructing a sentence. With practice, they will start using it in their spoken English too. If you want to know more about tenses, then click here.

The following chart represents the 12 tenses in the English language:

Besides the given worksheets, you can do another thing that I believe is a better reinforcer of the concept of tenses. Give just one sentence in the present tense e.g. I run to school and then, make the child write this sentence in all 12 forms of English tenses. No need to print any worksheets as any rough copy or notebook paper will do 😊.
Sentences that you can give your child for practicing:
1. A cat catches a mouse.
2. I sleep in my bed.
3. You close your eyes.
4. She brushes her teeth.
5. I write with a blue pen.
6. They run in the rain.
7. We play football.
If you want more sentences like these, you can always leave a comment and I will definitely reply to give you more ideas 😊.
I hope this helps. Every child is different so some children will do it faster while with others, you will have to show more patience. Again, patience is the key. Be gentle but regular with the above steps and I can assure you that your children will improve in both reading and speaking English.
